Ghost in the machine.

I know, this looks all kinds of different. Basically, Explorer is crashing every time the site loads, and this is a test to see if it’s my theme (too many scripts? maybe?) or if it’s some error with the server. What you’re seeing now is a clean, out-of-the-box, downloaded theme called Typogriph. It should be safe for all browsers. If things are still glitchy and ugly, it’s probably more serious.

So leave me comments if you’re on IE and reading this. I’m going to update this blog post while I hang around. Real time updates. You know how we do.

EDIT 1: Adrienne via FaceBook says success. The rest of you good, too?

EDIT #2: I forgot this delightful little story. Actually, I probably blocked it out. Sunday morning, we’re woken up by Elias and Addie rummaging in the pantry. Which isn’t unusual– Eli is going through his Independent Phase where he picks out his clothes, dresses himself according to the weather (he watches the weather channel, too; I kid you not), packs his lunches, and makes his own breakfast. I’m telling you. Five years old. It’s golden. So we think nothing of it. Time passes. Jason finally goes down to check on them and I hear the worst possible thing ever come out of his mouth: “OH MY GOD WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO OH MY GOD OH MY GOD GET UPSTAIRS AND INTO THE BATH NOW WHILE I CLEAN THIS UP!”

I don’t want to know. I do NOT want to know. I have to know.

I get up and the kids are TEARING up the stairs. Elias is in tears. “I was trying to be good,” he sniffles. “I didn’t want to wake you!”

“We were just tryin’ to HEWP!” Addie backs up.

“What happened?” I ask.

Okay, you know how– as a parent, as a human being– you have those moments where you or someone else ALMOST dies? Like– they were so close? And it blows your mind for the rest of the day that everyone made it out of the situation unscathed? And it still scares the F out of you because it COULD have gone down so differently?

Addie and Elias spilled something. I have no idea what. We can’t figure it out. Instead of waking us up, they decided to handle it themselves. So they took all the cleaning products in the ENTIRE HOUSE out and poured them all over the floor, ottoman, and of course, themselves.

We were such bad parents in this regard, because we only did a rudimentary one-time Don’t Touch The Chemicals Under The Sink talk. They had zero interest, even as babies, in getting into them. It never occurred to me that they would use them correctly someday and potentially injure themselves in the process.

They were both fine. Nobody ingested bleach, thank God, or even got too much on their hands. How, I don’t know. There was liters of this stuff on the floor, and very little on them. I was so so so so so freaked out as I washed them off in the tub. Elias was crushed. He was trying so hard to be good and adult, and I had to keep telling him that he wasn’t in Trouble, exactly, we were just terrified because those chemicals can burn or kill you. I very rarely bring out the Kill You thing. Bleach is one. I do not F around with that. You also can get Killed by running out into the street without looking both ways. Those are my biggies.

Addie had no clue why it was bad, but she at least got THAT it was bad, and not to do it again. “I pwommissse,” she sang lightly, pushing her bath toys in the bubbles. Everything is a hilarious game to her. She reacted the same way to not messing with Clorox as she did to not messing up her new dress.

Argh. It’s still giving me all these bad nervous vibes reliving it. I’m so glad they’re fine. I read a book once about parenting that says God always gives you a freebie. This is true. This is SO true. My kids have never seriously injured themselves the first time they attempted something dangerous. It’s always the second. So we can’t have a second here.

EDIT #3: Thanks, Shells, k, and Kyelie! Now all I have to do is… figure out a non-suck theme, I guess.

my opinion is that nobody should be voluntarily using internet explorer anyway. well, i’m more confused that people do use it voluntarily, heh.

maybe you could try taking away the things from your design that could be causing the crash and then re-adding them one by one to test them out in explorer… ugh, that gives me a headache just thinking about it >.>

Looks fine on IE and Firefox. :)

Oh man. That must have been so frightening. Thank goodness they’re okay! Is it weird to say that it is adorable nonetheless? That they were trying to help? Thankfully they know not to touch that stuff now.

It’s an absolute nightmare and NO-ONE likes admitting a parental mistake like this, but these things happen – all to varying degrees – to the best of us. Chalk it up to experience: you won’t ever leave those things in a place they can be accessed again, and the kids won’t touch them again – lessons learned all round. :)

I remember Sam falling down the stairs when I left the stairgate unlocked – omg. He couldn’t have been older than two, and I think I cried for about three days … See? We’ve all made mistakes. :p

    V xx

    Wow, talk about scary!

I should know better, but still use IE 7, and it looks fine. Yesterday, with other theme, I did have some hiccups where it would not load correctly. Tried later it worked fine.

Yes, every parent has those events where you are get the crap scared out of you, and you feel so bad because if you had ‘just been a better parent’ it would not have happened. But you ARE great parents, and everyone is fine. The pit in your stomache will be there whenever you think about it, but that is part of the price for all the other priceless times you get! Love you guys, and see you soon!

It worked fine in me for IE, then again, I’ve only checked twice.

You should bring the old theme back, you worked so hard on it – just design an IE specific version with less WP plugins and scripts, and alert the people viewing that they’re not getting the full experience, link them to a bunch of other browser downloads, etc etc.

There’s no reason to scrap something so good just because a small majority of internet users still can’t get with the program!

PS, RE: Addie & Elias getting into the chemicals; stating the obvious here but mistakes happen, this doesn’t make you bad parents in any way, shape or form – if I’m being entirely honest, I’ve never met (read about?) a family to be more envious about, so don’t think too badly about the whole thing.

Oh MAN. Thank God the kids are fine! I can’t even imagine how scary that would be!

I’m using Firefox (3.0.8) and both this theme and the previous one you put up looked perfectly fine. Don’t know about IE, though – sorry.

I only use IE at work when I have to. But I never had problems with the old layout on IE. I miss the old layout but I’ll be patient and wait for the glitch free version.

I’m SO glad the kids are okay. Bless their hearts — “we’re just trying to help!”

    Becca,

I think we all need to share these stories so we can learn from each others mistakes. I have a file in my head of things that I’ve learned from other parents for when I need them. For instance: my friend Melissa called me the other day saying that her 2 year old found a permanent markers. She said, “I’ve washed her face and now it’s all red but still marked up!” Immediately, I remembered the answer!

“Shaving cream!” Not as dire as Clorox on skin, but now I can tell her about that and possibly save her kids (who are not nearly as careful as your two) from serious injury.

    Love Ya!!

DUDE I had to leave you a message and my email wasn’t working… the next Deadliest Warrior episode is Viking vs. Samurai. LAWLS.

Very sorry for the scare your children gave you, but find it incredibly sweet that they wanted to help. Glad no one was hurt!

  16. web design April 25, 2009 at 1:46 am #

Seems fine on IE. Obviously it was resolved long time ago. Scary experience. Instills a reality check in you.

    Firefox does better.

Some websites are only applicable with firefox on the other hand some others only with IE.

You need to check more deeply the real problem.

    Any other ideas?
