Little children.
17 Jun
I have no memory for anything else, but I remember every person I talk to online or who comments here. I remember names, sites, tidbits, favorite foods and children and pets and jobs. I really, genuinely care about all of you, and I love hearing about your lives. I am thrilled when I find out you’re pregnant or get a promotion. I anxiously await moves or new homes. I mourn with you when you experience loss. And I am more than willing to help you in any way I can.
One of my readers, Colleen, has a 5-year-old daughter who is fighting a malignant brain tumor. Her name is Ellie. She is doing well despite the prognosis: 95% of the tumor was removed successfully, and she is now undergoing radiation and chemotherapy with the good doctors at St. Jude’s. Ellie’s favorite thing right now is to receive cards from friends. Elias, Addie, and I will be making some this week to send her, and I really want to encourage you all to do it, too. I know there are SO many kind-hearted people on here, and it only takes a few minutes out of your day to write down a message to Ellie and drop it in the mailbox. It would bring some happiness to a really wonderful little girl, and it never hurts to put good karma out there.
You can send cards to:

There’s more information about Ellie on her mother’s website. Thank you all in advance for your generosity and support.
OKAY. Onto the far-less-important happenings around here.
Elias is going to his first sleepover tomorrow night. Philip has been waiting for school to be out, because that was his mother’s stipulation about said sleepover. Eli is pretty calm about the entire thing. “There’s no reason to be scared,” I told him today while we were cleaning, and he frowned, “Why would I be scared? They’re going to feed me, right?”
“Yes, of course. It’s just sometimes kids are afraid when they’re away from home. But you don’t need to be.”
“Okay,” Elias agreed, and went back to playing with his Star Wars figures. Well. Okay, then.
I figured while he’s gone having boy time, I’ll have girl time with Addie. Maybe I’ll buy ice cream, and we’ll paint toenails and watch movies together. I think it would be nice to carve out some bonding for the two of us.
Chris is coming tomorrow, too! I almost forgot! He’s stopping by for a job interview. I’ll probably only see him for a few minutes– we need to trade items: he forgot his glasses last time, and I forgot to get Ikea screws he was delivering. If you have any more good karma in you, cross your fingers for Chris. I’m really hoping they get down here by the end of the summer.
The only other things of note are Eli’s awesome quotes lately. The first happened when he told me he had a girlfriend.
“You DO?” We were making breakfast. He was holding onto my leg, hugging it, giddy. “What’s she like?”
“She’s older,” he answered. “She’s 11.”
“11? Woah, that’s a lot older.”
“Oh yeah,” Elias sighed happily. “I don’t see her all the time, but when I do, I like her.”
“Well, what does she look like?”
He thought for a minute: “She has a head– two legs… a shirt… and arms.”
BWAHAHAHAHA. That is STILL cracking me up. I found out later it was the oldest of the three girls who lives across the street. (She isn’t really his girlfriend. He mostly gets to sit next to her on the curb, and she listens patiently while he talks about ninjas.) She is a total doll– both looks and personality wise– so way to go, Eli. You have good taste.
The other quote I wasn’t sure I was going to mention, but this was SO perfectly Addie and Eli, and this punchline was one of my favorites ever. I can’t resist. Two days ago, I bought a toddler pool and set it up in the backyard. They swam. They came in for lunch and stripped off their suits. So now I have two stark naked kids in the kitchen. Addie suddenly noticed Eli’s Boy Bits.
“woah,” she gasped. “i can share it?”
Eli looked at her Girl Parts and scoffed, dismissive: “FORGET IT ADDIE. You already lost yours.”

Nick LOVES making cards so we will definitely be sending some love and prayers to Ellie! It’s so sweet and thoughtful of you to spread this around so she can see how many people care!!!
And I love your kids, that is HILARIOUS.
haha, ‘you already lost yours’…. elias is such a crack up.
my thoughts are with colleen and ellie. my heart goes out to any family that is dealing with cancer, or any serious illness really. especially since it’s been something i’ve recently experienced, i really wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
i’ll definately keep my fingers crossed that chris finds an awesome job and they can move down really soon. and i hope elias has a good time on his first sleepover.
i just had to comment on this post. the big difference between karma and Christianity is that with karma, you are essentially doing good so that you get blessed in return. as a follower of Christ, you bless others because God loves everyone, not because there is anything in it for you. i’ll be praying for little ellie as well as for a job for chris.
Hillary,
I’ve always used ‘karma’ as a slang for ‘vibes’ in general… I didn’t even think of the religious angle until you mentioned it. My intent was more to put positive energy out there.
L,
I knew as soon as I posted this you would totally get it. xo
Ash,
Please take pictures of Nick’s cards and post them on your Vox! That’s so wonderful; thank you so much for pitching in. Much love to your family!
I’m sending my happiest thoughts to Colleen and Ellie, and will definitely send a little something when I’m not swamped with school.
I’ve been reading your blog pretty consistently for a few months now. It’s one of a few that I frequent on a daily basis (obviously hoping for a new entry).
Anyway, Elias and Addie just crack me up. The second quote just brightened my day. Thanks, Becca! I’m very glad that you share your lives with us for us to read.
That second quote was the funniest thing I have read in ages! Addie and Elias are so great!
Thank you for pointing us in Ellie’s direction. My heart is with her and hopefully we can get something out to her asap.
That is too cute about Eli’s “girlfriend”. When I was around 9 there were these 2 little boys (about 4 and 5 years old) who lived up the street and one of them called me his girlfriend and the other called my sister his girlfriend. It was really cute and your story about Eli reminded me of them.
I’m also sending Ellie a card and will think good thoughts for her.
My heart goes out for Colleen, Ellie and her family. <3
The second Eli-Addie convo cracked me up. How hilarious! Do they not together ever? When I was little my brother and I took baths and it was simply boys and girls have different parts.
P.S. I use ‘karma’ all of the time… probably overuse the word lol.
bhahahah omg the last quote is AMAZING!!
i will take time to write ellie something, i will try to remember. i am glad she is doing better i hope god has her in his thoughts
My five year old loves making cards and sending them so we will get some out to Ellie, for sure! That’s so cute about Elias’ girlfriend. I love his description. I wish I could bottle up this age and keep them like this forever!
The last quote…PRICELESS! That made me laugh out loud at work, people probably think I’m crazy now. Woah! I hope I have funny comedic adorable children like yours.
I’ve been lurking for a while, but I just had to comment on this one. Sitting on the curb listening to a boy talk about ninjas? Pretty much a summary of my last two relationships. Except that it’s a lot more adorable when a five year old does it…
‘you already lost yours.’ that is classic.
the description of his girlfriend?? perfection. love it.
my thought are with Colleen today. wow. so tough.
I almost spit out my water when I read what Eli said to Addie. How funny! Your house must be a great house to live in
That is so cute about the girlfriend thing – but definitely the definition of a girlfriend at that age, don’t you think?
Older girls are a lot of fun, they have much more experience.
PS when E gets older he will be a lady killer, you might want to start worrying now Becca :-p
lol.. love that last quote!
priceless!
I so want to make a card for the little girl… I think I’ll be evil and use my Library Powers of Craftiness at work tomorrow to whip up an AWESOME card!
I love Eli’s description of his gf… I mean, it makes sense more than our usual answers to the question of what someone looks like. He was covering all the bases.
And it cracks me up that Eli said the classic line from all the little boy/girl jokes… I can totally hear him saying it in my head. But I think Addie’s question of “I can share it?” is the funniest part of that entire thing to me. I do believe I’ll use it from now on, especially when hubby’s in his birthday suit. hahahaha….ha.
I have some lovely note cards I ordered from ShutterFly last month, and Ellie is the perfect excuse to finally use one! I’m going to write her a little note and hopefully enclose something special for her tomorrow. Thank you for sharing her story with us!
Ooooooo, that last quote is GOLD.
I’ll have to sit down with Taylor and help her make a card for Ellie.
Oh Becca, the layout is BEAUTIFUL! I love it!
And I will definitely send a card or something to Ellie!
Oooh, I LOVE this theme!
Love the new layout! I can always count on you to come up with something cute!
BECCA I love this new design! Seriously, you have such a talent for this.
I’m always so jealous of your cute layouts!
Hi Becca!
The layout looks great! I love the colors you chose.. cheery.
My husband says it’s “cheery but not obnoxious.” Heh.
first of all, what a sweet thing to do for ellie! i’m sure the kids will love making them as much as she loves receiving them!
second of all, i love the eli/addie quotes. precious.
